Pu‘u Hao Solar + Storage statement
AES Hawai‘i has made the difficult, but necessary, decision to withdraw its Pu‘u Hao Solar + Storage project in Kihei, Maui from Hawaiian Electric’s Stage 3 RFP selection process.
Unfortunately, an unforeseen land issue delaying the project’s interconnection to Hawaiian Electric’s grid has made it impossible for us to ensure its completion by the RFP-mandated deadline. Despite this, AES Hawaiʻi is deeply committed to meeting Maui's energy needs through renewable resources and will continue to pursue opportunities to help the island and the state reach its clean energy goals.
We greatly value our ongoing partnership with Hawaiian Electric to provide renewable energy solutions supporting the power needs of communities, residents, and businesses on O‘ahu, Maui and Hawai‘i Island, and share their long-term commitment to make the state less dependent on imported oil for producing electricity. We fully support the State of Hawai‘i’s 100% renewable energy and decarbonization goals and will continue to work toward developing more clean energy projects to reach those targets.
We appreciate the interest and support we’ve received on this project. We urge you to follow our progress on our other Maui RFP 3 project, Kūihelani Solar Phase 2, or our other renewable energy projects throughout the state. If you have any questions, please direct them to aeshawaii@aes.com.
Mahalo,
Pu‘u Hao Solar + Storage
